Anniversary Composition Competition

Information:

  • The competition is open to students and young people up to the age of 21 who live in, or are educated in the North West of England (Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire).

  • The work can be in any style but should reflect the celebratory mood of the anniversary. It should be between 2.5 and 7 minutes long.

  • Compositions can be for any combination of instruments, but works which utilise the full range of orchestral instruments may be favoured over those that use a smaller group. You may optionally include parts for alto sax, electric bass and drum kit but please do not write a keyboard part.

  • The closing date is 31st March 2023. Rehearsals for the summer concert begin in April.

  • The winning entrant will be invited to work with composer and WYO conductor, Fredrik Holm, to finalise the work to fit the exact forces available for the concert. Unfortunately this cannot be determined in advance as we are inviting WYO alumni to take part in the concert and will not have final numbers until the end of March.

  • For musical questions including format and instrumentation etc you are welcome to contact Fredrik Holm fredrik.intune@gmail.com 07780 623855For anything else please contact the WYO Administrator admin@wyo.org.uk

  • Please submit in either .sib or .xml format to admin@wyo.org.uk or in handwritten format to Fredrik Holm, In Tune, 3 Milking Stile Lane, Lancaster,  LA1 5QB

  • The winner will be contacted by mid April. They will be invited to attend the concert in June when we plan to present the prize.

The Westmorland Youth Orchestra is delighted to announce its 75th anniversary composition competition. We are looking for a new orchestral work to be performed by WYO as part of our anniversary celebrations at our concert on Saturday 24 June 2023 at Kendal Parish Church.

The winner will also receive a cash prize of £200.
